"Crow's Nest: Yearbook"

Yearbook

Project

Production of yearbook for K-12 school designed using Adobe InDesign with Photoshop and published electronically with Acrobat Professional and Enfocus.

Context

For several years, the yearbook functions have been divided into two courses, Graphic Design, and Journalism, thereby providing students the opportunity to pursue their preferred area of study in greater depth.

Conditions

  • As an elective, the number of students who enroll varies between twenty and thirty in multiple class sections..
  • Coverage must represent the school's three campuses.
  • As the majority of students take Graphics for only one year, the first month is devoted to intensive training.

Scope

  • Students experience a high-pressure production course very unlike their other academic courses.
  • Students deal with balancing creativity and self-reliance against deadlines.
  • After producing the yearbook which incorporates many labor-saving publisher aids, the students are ready to independently design and layout the school's literary magazine.

Role

  • Students are consistently unable to attend summer workshops which means that class time must be spent on training rather than design.
  • Collaboration and group design work reduces reliance on a single individual.
  • My role is to motivate, challenge and drive the students to seek perfection. Everyone is expected to put forth their best efforts.
